“Girls come on up, it’s time for lunch.” I called to the basement. The sound of hungry feet pounded on the stairs. “What are we having?” my youngest asked. “Mac n’cheese and fruit,” I replied with fervor. “Aw..I didn’t ORDER mac n’cheese,” she said.

“What do you think this is a restaurant?!” I said laughing.

One thing is for sure, in this fast food, on the go culture, we are used to getting what we want, when we want it. When I consider this encounter through the lens of gospel I recognize that most days I approach God with a hunger, just as my daughter did. But the question becomes what do I hunger for?

Could it be what I hunger and thirst for is what I want and not what He has prepared for me?

Does my lack of hunger for what He has prepared make me unable to receive His blessings with gratitude?

Am I so used to getting my way that it hinders my ability to “taste and see” that the Lord is good?

Yes, yes and yes!

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Matthew 5:6 (ESV).

In an article by The Ancient Hebrew Reference Center, we learn, “A righteous person is not one who lives a religiously pious life, the common misinterpretation of this word, he is one who follows the correct path, the path (way) of God.”

I often approach the Lord with my agenda and requests. And I miss out on what He has prepared for me because my eyes are set on ME and not on HIM. I get more concerned with the fat content of the dessert that He prepared (details of life) than with the awesome opportunity I have to sit at the Lord’s table and know Him intimately.

Feeling filled and satisfied in the Lord means that we understand why we approach the table in the first place. Do we approach Him to air our grievances? Do we approach Him as a short order cook, with our own interests and pursuits in mind?

Do we seek to get to know the one who’s hand made the food and who’s words spoke it into existence? Do we spend time with Him in order to be more like Him?

Being satisfied begins with seeking the right things. It comes by seeking what God wants for us and wanting what He has prepared for us.
